Rivers State, Nigeria: TotalSupport Limited, a recognized leader in production, management, optimization, and distribution of clean energy and renewable systems in West Africa, announces a groundbreaking partnership with HeliosAltas to bring affordable, reliable micro hydropower to the region.
With over 590 million people, Sub-Saharan Africa has some of the highest energy poverty rates in the world. More than 50 percent of the population lives without power, relying on firewood, kerosene, or expensive, polluting, small-scale diesel generators. That number rises to nearly 75 percent for people living in rural areas where grid-tied power is unavailable.
Realizing the immense social, economic, and health impact of energy poverty, many organizations, government agencies, and private enterprise have come together in recent years to support electrification programs in areas such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
The fragmented grid infrastructure, coupled with environmental and policy challenges, have steered most regional electrification projects towards solar-based and hybrid ‘mini-grids’ capable of reaching remote areas where grid-tied power is unavailable or unreliable.
TotalSupport Limited is uniquely suited to bring Helios PowerWheel technology to areas wherever affordable, reliable power is needed including rural, remote, and urban communities. With an extensive track record of projects in the tens of millions (USD), including many off-grid installations, their commitment to quality and sustainability is unequaled in the region.
We’re very excited to announce that several of our latest Helios PowerWheel units have just been delivered to Nigeria where they will be installed as fully operational demonstration models. Our goal is to introduce our technology to the region and create a new paradigm for delivering clean, affordable energy to remote villages, commercial enterprise, and local utility cooperatives.
TotalSupport Limited President, Ubani Mkaginieme, is very excited about our collective vision to help solve the regional energy crisis while expanding clean energy opportunities throughout West Africa and beyond, “Traditionally most facilities in Africa rely on diesel/fuel-oil fuels as their primary fuel for back-up and base-load energy. This results in unacceptable pollution levels. These fuels are also very expensive. However, they are readily available. Hence, industries tendency to keep using them. However, we are now giving our clients cheaper, cleaner energy options.”
Mkaginieme anticipates Helios PowerWheel technology will be a welcome addition to his company’s clean energy arsenal for both grid-tied and off-grid applications throughout the region, “We are very excited about the units, which are on their way to Nigeria. We plan to install these units in various settings and demonstrate their versatility and practicality to officials and stakeholders in Nigeria and other West African countries.”
With our partners TotalSupport Limited, we expect to secure a number of large public and private sector purchase and lease contracts throughout Nigeria and the surrounding region. Leading to the installation of several thousand Helios PowerWheel Systems by 2024. Most of these units will be added to new and existing mini-grid configurations. Providing reliable baseload power while offsetting the inherent limitations of solar and battery power alone.
Our combined efforts will have a profound impact on the quality of life for millions of people living in these areas, while providing a sustainable energy solution for residential, commercial, and utility applications for decades to come.
